Creative Projects

Currently, I am exploring contemporary dance and photography in a series of artistic, experimental projects. Together, these projects form part of a larger project titled ‘The Canberra Contemporary Dance Project.’ You can see the results of my first project ‘Lighting and Dance Experiments,’ below (dancers Jahna, Sarah and Olivia).

With my current series ‘The In-Between’, I am creating photographs inspired by the in-between or transition moments that occur in dance. The photographs will be abstract in nature and use various photographic techniques. Each portrait session within this project will be a collaboration between myself and the dancer, meaning every session will be different, but have a common thread of the in-between.

Dancers will receive a half hour portrait session and two high resolution, edited images. Extra photos are available for a fee. Dancers are also welcome to add a portrait collection session onto the end of the shoot.

Dancer eligibility requirements:

  • Aged 16+ years old
  • Resident of Canberra or surrounding areas
  • Sound contemporary dance skills at an intermediate to advanced level
  • Ability to choreograph short sequences and be comfortable with improvisation
  • Willingness to have their images posted to social media and on the photographer’s website (under 18 years must provide parental permission)
  • Ability to commit to the project and collaborate with the photographer in creating images, planning for the photoshoot and any post production involvement.

If this project sounds like your vibe, and you meet eligibility requirements, I’d love to hear from you! Please contact me for further details or how to apply. Please note places are limited for this project. You can email a short, EOI to justinelennane@gmail.com by midnight Sunday 11 October 2026 to be considered. This project will be undertaken in October and November 2026.

I feel so honoured to have had the opportunity to work with Justine Lennane on her Canberra Contemporary Dance Project! The experience was nothing but positive and rewarding, with Justine providing a space that felt welcoming and supportive. I was encouraged to express myself creatively, which allowed me to experiment with new moves and shapes that I had never tried before. Throughout the photoshoot, I felt confident taking risks, trying new ideas and focusing on the creative process rather than executing every move perfectly. After stepping out of my comfort zone and participating in a photoshoot for the first time, I now have a greater sense of confidence in my movement and a stronger appreciation of how expression and emotion is captured through dance.

Justine was professional and friendly. She made me feel really comfortable during the shoot and we collaborated to come up with really creative and artistic portraits which I love. Highly recommend!
